Introduction

This guide helps with performing an in-place upgrade of ORF from a preceding version to version 5.0.

Overview

Upgrading your current ORF installation takes installing the new version on top of the previous version.

There is no need to remove the previous version first (in fact, that would result in losing your current ORF settings).

Preparations

Safety backup

ORF will automatically transfer your current settings to the new version. As a safety measure, you can create a backup of your ORF settings as described in the Configuration Backup Guide.

Service outage planning

Under Microsoft® Exchange 2010 and 2007, the ORF Setup has to restart the MSExchangeTransport service to finalize the upgrade. SMTP email transmission will be down while the MSExchangeTransport service is restarting. This usually takes less than a minute (differences may occur).

Under Microsoft® Exchange 2003, Exchange 2000 and IIS SMTP, the ORF Setup has to restart the Microsoft® IIS Administration Service and all dependent services, such as the World Wide Web, SMTP, FTP and Exchange services. This may take several minutes and the services will not be available during the restart. If you previously had issues with shutting down the iisadmin service, it is recommended to shut down IIS completely before the upgrade using the iisreset /stop command. You can restart IIS services with the iisreset /start command after the upgrade.

It is recommended to schedule the conversion to a time when the service outage causes the least problems.

The upgrade process usually takes just a few minutes.

Exit from running programs

Before starting the upgrade, close the following programs if they are running:

  • Windows® Event Log Viewer MMC
  • Windows® Services MMC

In-Place Upgrade

Starting the upgrade

Make sure that you are logged in as administrator. Run the new version ORF Setup binary on the computer that has the previous version installed.

The upgrade process

The upgrade is guided by the ORF Setup program. No special configuration is required at this point, the Setup asks for the usual installation parameters, such as the program directory and menu shortcut creation.

Completing the upgrade

At this point, the new ORF version is installed, but the ORF Service is down and thus ORF is not filtering emails.

1

Start the ORF Administration Tool

If you have selected the default installation options, the Administration Tool icon is already on your desktop or it is available under the ORF Fusion 5.0 group of the Start menu.

2

Connect to the local installation

Click the Connect to button in the Administration Tool window and select the Connect locally option from the dialog displayed, then click Connect button.

3

Review changes

Upon connecting, ORF will provide you with information about the new version. Once you familiarized yourself with the changes and new features, proceed to the next step.

4

Update your configuration

Press CTRL-S or select File | Save Configuration from the menu to upgrade your configuration to the latest version.

5

Start the ORF Service

Start the ORF Service by pressing F11 or Service | Start ORF Service.

Upgrade to Another Computer

If you are installing the new version to a server different from your current ORF server and want to preserve your configuration and data, follow the steps of the Migration Guide, but use the new version installer on the target server.
