Introduction

This short guide helps you to seamlessly convert your current ORF evaluation version into the registered version.

Overview

Converting your evaluation version into the registered version takes installing the registered version on top of the evaluation version.

There is no need to remove the evaluation version first (in fact, that would result in losing your current ORF settings).

Preparations

Safety backup

ORF will automatically transfer your current settings to the registered version. As a safety measure, you can create a backup of your ORF settings as described in the Configuration Backup Guide. Use the same procedure if you are installing the registered ORF version on another computer and want to transfer your settings made during the evaluation.

Service outage planning

Under Microsoft® Exchange 2010 and 2007, the ORF Setup has to restart the MSExchangeTransport service to finalize the conversion. SMTP email transmission will be down while the MSExchangeTransport service is restarting. This usually takes less than a minute (differences may occur).

Under Microsoft® Exchange 2003, Exchange 2000 and IIS SMTP, the ORF Setup has to restart the Microsoft® IIS Administration Service and all dependent services, such as the World Wide Web, SMTP, FTP and Exchange services. This may take several minutes and the services will not be available during the restart. If you previously had issues with shutting down the iisadmin service, it is recommended to shut down IIS completely before the conversion using the iisreset /stop command. You can restart IIS services with the iisreset /start command after the conversion.

It is recommended to schedule the conversion to a time when the service outage causes the least problems.

The conversion usually takes just a few minutes.

Exit from running programs

Before starting the upgrade, close the following programs if they are running:

  • Windows® Event Log Viewer MMC
  • Windows® Services MMC

Conversion

Starting the conversion

Make sure that you are logged in as administrator. Run the registered ORF Setup binary on the computer that has the evaluation version installed.

The conversion process

The update is guided by the ORF Setup program. No special configuration is required at this point, the Setup asks for the usual installation parameters, such as the program directory and menu shortcut creation.

Completing the Conversion

At this point, the registered ORF version is installed, but the ORF Service is down and thus ORF is not filtering emails.

Start the ORF Service either using the ORF Administration Tool or the Services MMC or from command-line using net start orfeesvc.
