DMARC Test Settings

This help section describes the DMARC Test Settings dialog of ORF.

Evaluation Tab

Enforce compliance with DMARC's header requirements

In order to be processed by DMARC, a message header needs to contain no more than one From: field with at least one syntactically valid email address within it. Messages with empty or multiple From: fields are forbidden under the Internet Message Standard (RFC5322). Enable this option to blacklist the email if it violates the above requirements.

Scrutinize misleading email addresses

Most email clients present only the ”display-name” portion of the From header address to the user and not the email address when both are available, which allows scammers to display a fake email address in place of a full name and hide the real source address. By enabling this option, you allow ORF to run the DMARC mechanism on both the display-name and the address-specification portion of the From header field.

Take no action if a "p=none" policy is discovered

Domain owners who want to test their DMARC policy before implementing authentication measures may request receiving servers not to take action if the DMARC check fails. Enable this option if you want ORF to comply with this request.

Adhere to the domain owner's "p=quarantine" policy

Use this option to configure a different filtering action for emails that fail validation but should be treated with less rigor according to the sender’s DMARC policy.

Exceptions Tab

Sender Email Exceptions

Use this list to exclude specific senders from the DMARC test by the From header address or domain.

Sender IP Exceptions

Use this list to exclude specific senders from the DMARC test by the sender IP address or network range.

Log Tab

Always log DMARC check results

Set this checkbox to log DMARC evaluation results, even if the email was not blacklisted. The evaluation result appears in the log as a separate entry and logged only if the sender published a DMARC policy.

Log SPF and DKIM check results

When a DMARC record is found for a sending domain, ORF runs the SPF the DKIM tests "silently" as part of the DMARC validation process. Set this checkbox if you want ORF to log the results of these sub-tests as well. The SPF and DKIM log detail levels are governed by the log settings of the SPF and DKIM tests.
